So I logged onto Tumblr just now and my eyes almost popped out of my head at the number of messages in my ask box. A lot of people asked me how I got my desktop to look like the one in the photo (original post here). So here’s the post telling you how!
HOW TO GET A FANCY SCHMANCY DESKTOP
I. Download Stuff:
Open the program and use preferences to change how you want the calendar to look. Remember to 1) click the lock button in the ‘Appearance’ tab so it doesn’t move when you drag it and 2) set it to open at login in the ‘General’ tab.
III. Configuring Geektool:
So this is the slightly complicated bit. Each element (clock, music player, dates) in the calendar needs its own code. For each element, be sure to create a new ‘SHELL,’ which can be done by clicking and dragging the icon (in the config panel, after opening the program) onto the desktop. To enter the code, copy/paste the following into the ‘COMMAND.’ Set ‘REFRESH’ to every 1s and ‘TIMEOUT’ to 0s.
Hour: date +”%I.%M”
AM/PM: date +”%p”
Day: date +%d
Month: date +%B
Copy & paste this exact code into the command box. Tumblr screws up the code, so it needs to be downloaded as text.
If you prefer to use iTunes, change ‘Spotify.app’ to ‘iTunes.app.’ Unfortunately, this code keeps the music player open at all times, even after you try to exit. To exit it completely, have the ‘music player’ code in its own group and just uncheck the box to unselect it. To use the progress bar, download this script and save it in ‘Scripts’ in your ‘Documents’ folder.
Song Title: osascript -e ‘tell application “Spotify.app” to if player state is playing then get name of current track’
Artist Name: osascript -e ‘tell application “Spotify.app” to if player state is playing then get artist of current track’
Hopefully this tutorial was clear. If there are any questions, my ask is open!
MOST IMPORTANTLY: I did NOT make the background image (I just Photoshopped it to be brighter). I found it on Google. The original artist is on DeviantArt.
